Apple’s $1,999 iPhone Duo puts the company's status-symbol power to the test
Apple’s $1,999 iPhone Duo is drawing early demand as analysts assess whether the foldable can lift iPhone pricing and revenue.
Key points
- Apple's first foldable iPhone, the Duo, starts at $1,999 and tops $3,000 at 2TB.
- Preorders began Friday; launch-day pickup sold out and some deliveries slipped to late January.
- Analysts say the Duo targets high-spending iPhone owners rather than the mass market.
Apple's iPhone Duo, its most expensive iPhone ever, went up for preorder Friday. Launch-day pickup inventory sold out and some online delivery estimates already slipped into late January.
The first foldable iPhone starts at $1,999 and passes $3,000 at the 2TB storage tier. Apple called preorder demand "nothing short of extraordinary" and said it is working to get the product to customers quickly while continuing to accept online orders.
A small but valuable market
Analysts told CNBC that Apple's bet is not that foldables become mass-market. It is that a relatively small group of its highest-spending customers becomes significantly more valuable.
IDC expects foldables to make up just over 2% of global smartphone units this year but nearly 7% of industry revenue. By 2030, IDC expects 10% of smartphone revenue while units remain about 3%.

Scarcity and status appeal
Counterpoint Research Director Tarun Pathak told CNBC that initial demand is expected to exceed supply. He noted Apple's installed base of roughly 1.4 billion iPhones, meaning even a small share of early adopters could overwhelm the roughly 6 million or fewer units Counterpoint expects near term.
IDC also expects constrained supply initially because of device complexity and Apple's manufacturing and quality standards. IDC's Nabila Popal said, "Exclusivity is part of the current appeal."
Impact on Apple's revenue
Analysts said many Duo buyers will be existing iPhone owners, including those who might have bought a Pro Max and are now trading up. Others may add the Duo as a second smartphone.
Popal said migration from roughly $1,200 premium iPhones to a device starting near $2,000 should give a "healthy boost" to Apple's revenue even if volumes stay small. IDC expects Apple to ship roughly 7 million units this year, about 3% of its total 2026 shipments, with Duo shipments possibly growing another 70% next year.
