Martinez calls out Man Utd hierarchy

Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez launched an extraordinary attack on the club’s hierarchy after their 2-0 Champions League loss at Atletico Madrid.

Key points

  • Lisandro Martinez criticised Manchester United's hierarchy after a 2-0 Champions League loss at Atletico Madrid.
  • He said he expected more summer investment and named technical director Jason Wilcox.
  • United spent £155m on four major summer signings after finishing third last season.

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez publicly criticised the club's hierarchy after Tuesday's 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid. In a post-match interview with Amazon Prime, the Argentina international said he expected more from the people above him at Old Trafford.

United spent £155m on four major summer signings after finishing third in the Premier League last season, which brought a return to the Champions League for the first time in three years. The loss in Madrid extended United's winless run to five games.

What Martinez said

Martinez said he had expected more investment in the squad and named technical director Jason Wilcox. "I expect more from our technical director," he said, adding that he had expected more from "upstairs".

Asked about manager Michael Carrick's future, Martinez questioned why managers keep changing while other areas go unaddressed. He said Carrick "does his best" but that the team cannot stand still because opponents know their play.

I expect more from our technical director. I have to be honest.

— Lisandro Martinez

Reaction to the interview

Carrick said he had not seen the interview and that it was partly down to the emotions of the game. He said it was important for United to move forward quickly ahead of Sunday's game.

Former United striker Wayne Rooney told Amazon Prime that Martinez had "maybe gone a bit too far" and that such matters should stay internal. Sky Sports' Jamie Carragher told CBS Sports the comments were "awful" and would not help the club.
