Why play-off win may not send Wales to World Cup

Wales face Norway in the Women's World Cup play-off final knowing even a famous victory may not be enough to send them to Brazil in 2027.

Key points

  • Wales face Norway in a two-leg World Cup play-off final on 1 and 5 December.
  • Even a win may not send Wales directly to the World Cup.
  • Finland's result against Italy will decide Wales' qualification route.

Wales will play Norway in the Women's World Cup play-off final, with the home leg at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday, 1 December and the return in Norway four days later. Rhian Wilkinson's side reached the final after beating Albania in Tuesday's semi-final.

A win over Norway would rank among Wales' greatest achievements, but it may not be enough to secure a place at a first Women's World Cup because of the qualification process.

How qualification works

Wales' tie is one of eight European play-off finals. Seven winners go directly to the tournament, while one nation - the lowest-ranked from the group stage of qualifying - must go to inter-confederation play-offs in February.

Only Denmark, France, Germany and reigning champions Spain are already sure of World Cup places. Before the semi-finals, Wales looked likely to be the lowest-ranked team in the last 16, but Finland's win over Serbia changed that, as Finland were below Wales in the group stage rankings.

no friends on the night over the two legs. We are going out to cause a few upsets.

Norway and the Finland factor

If Finland beat Italy, a Welsh win over Norway would send Wales straight to the World Cup. If Finland lose, Wales would face the inter-confederation play-offs even by beating Norway. Other European final results do not affect Wales.

Norway are 13th in the Fifa rankings, 18 places above Wales, after an 8-0 aggregate win over Romania. Norway have never missed a World Cup and won in 1995, while Wales have never reached one and have never beaten a top-20 side in a competitive game. Norway are coached by Gemma Grainger, who left Wales in 2024.
