Alexander brothers each sentenced to 30 years in prison in sex trafficking case

The trio - two of whom were high-profile US real estate moguls - were found guilty using their social status to lure women to parties and then raping them.

Key points

  • Tal Alexander and twins Oren and Alon Alexander were each sentenced to 30 years in prison in New York for drugging and raping dozens of women over decades.
  • Judge Valerie Caproni called their conduct monstrous and questioned how someone who never admitted wrongdoing could be rehabilitated.
  • Twelve victims spoke at the sentencing, and 11 women testified during the five-week trial about assaults that began in 2008.

Three brothers, including two wealthy real-estate figures, were sentenced to 30 years each in prison in New York for drugging and raping dozens of women over decades. Tal Alexander, 40, and twins Oren and Alon Alexander, 39, were found guilty in March of using their wealth and social status to lure women to parties and luxury homes, where they sexually assaulted them.

Judge Valerie Caproni imposed the sentences on Tuesday after hearing from 12 victims, including one who did not testify at trial. Many of the women asked for the maximum penalty of life in prison for each brother.

What victims told the court

Maya Miller said she lost all sense of safety after Tal Alexander raped her in 2014, telling the court she carries "a quiet funeral within me." Another woman, using the pseudonym Isa Brooks, said she lost the ability to trust herself after being raped by Tal and Alon Alexander when she was 16.

Another woman said Tal Alexander threatened her when she planned to come forward, saying he knew where her sister worked. Prosecutor Elizabeth Espinosa said the brothers "honed their methods of luring women with the promise of luxury" and were unmoved by the suffering they caused.

Your conduct was monstrous. Your crimes wreaked havoc on their lives.

— Judge Valerie Caproni

Defense and the trial

Lawyers for the brothers sought 15-year sentences, arguing they had become devoted fathers whose families would suffer in their absence. The three addressed the court and maintained their innocence; Tal Alexander described a "work-hard, play-hard mentality" and said he saw how his behavior hurt people's feelings.

Caproni criticized them for refusing to admit their crimes. She sentenced each to 30 years for certain crimes and 20 years for additional crimes, to be served concurrently. During the five-week trial, 11 women, several of them minors at the time, testified that the brothers gave them gifts and flew them to places including Aspen and the Bahamas, where they fed them drugs before raping them. Prosecutors said the pattern began in high school, though the trial covered crimes starting in 2008.
