ChatGPT can peek at your Chrome tabs now

OpenAI's ChatGPT Chrome extension has received upgrades that allow it to use the browser tabs a user already has open. With the extension installed, OpenAI says ChatGPT can view your browser tabs when you tag Chrome in ChatGPT's web or desktop app. The company posted a demo video showing someone asking ChatGPT to compare three open tabs with sofas they were considering.

The update follows the removal of OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas browser. OpenAI also listed sample queries for the upgraded add-on, including using details in an event brief to fill out a registration form and stopping before submitting, and putting vendors from open tabs into a comparison sheet with pricing, key features, and source links.

What the upgrade can do

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT can now view your browser tabs when you tag Chrome in its web or desktop app. The extension also enables ChatGPT Work to "control" your Chrome tabs for tasks such as sending messages, filling out forms, or downloading files. OpenAI compared this to Google's Gemini-powered "auto browse" feature.

The upgraded add-on can also organize or group open tabs. OpenAI's sample queries include looking at all open tabs to compare contractor services and then drafting an email to the one that fits a home renovation, as well as filling out a form open in @chrome ahead of a dentist appointment and adding the appointment to work and personal calendars.

Sidebar and conversation history

OpenAI also updated ChatGPT in the sidebar. It now offers "the full power of ChatGPT" and your entire conversation history in Chat or Work to use without leaving the page you are viewing.
