Figma is also releasing its code layers feature in open beta.
Key points
- Figma announced Figma Specs, a Markdown-based editor for defining design language, at its first Config event in India.
- The company made its code layers feature available in public beta after a private beta announced in June.
- Figma is integrating Payload, which it acquired last year, into its Figma Make product and supports over 20 new tools via its MCP.
At its first Config event in India this week, Figma announced new features aimed at defining how AI agents work on its platform. The design company introduced Figma Specs, a Markdown-based editor that lets users define their design language in a simple way, according to the company.
The event also brought updates on Figma's code layers feature and its integration with Payload, the headless content management system it acquired last year. Figma said India is its biggest market outside the United States.
What Figma Specs does
Figma Specs can exist as a standalone file in Figma or within the canvas. Users can reference other Figma elements, such as canvas elements, and embed FigJam diagrams, code layers, and designs.
Teams can also bring in design libraries, code libraries, and guidelines to manage context for the design system. Agents can refer to this centralized system to adhere to design rules.
We see Figma as the place where software teams come to decide what they build and ship.

Code layers and Payload integration
Figma made its code layers feature, which adds coding to designs on canvas for interactive prototypes, available in public beta. The company had announced the feature in private beta in June. Users can ask the agent to turn a design into code or change part of the code to iterate on a prototype.
Figma is integrating Payload into its Figma Make product for generating dynamic websites and managing content. The company said Payload's downloads have increased sixfold in the last 12 months. Figma also said it supports over 20 new tools with its MCP, including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and Indian AI startup Sarvam.
