Haas sign Brazilian Camara as Ocon replacement

Formula 2 championship leader Rafael Camara will join Haas on a multi-year deal from the 2027 season as the Brazilian driver steps up to Formula 1.

Key points

  • Rafael Camara will join Haas on a multi-year deal from the 2027 Formula 1 season.
  • Camara, 21, leads the 2026 Formula 2 standings and won the 2025 Formula 3 title.
  • Camara replaces Esteban Ocon, whose departure from Haas was confirmed in September.

Haas have signed Formula 2 championship leader Rafael Camara on a multi-year deal starting from the 2027 season. The 21-year-old Brazilian will step up to Formula 1, replacing Esteban Ocon, whose exit from the team at the end of this season was confirmed in September.

Camara, a member of Ferrari's driver academy since 2021, won last year's Formula 3 championship and currently leads the Formula 2 standings with two rounds remaining. He tested Haas's 2025 car at Portugal's Portimao track in August.

What team officials said

Team principal Ayao Komatsu said he was excited to sign "such a young, amazing talent" and praised Camara's speed in difficult moments, including qualifying in Monaco and Montreal. Komatsu added that Camara's test in Portugal showed he could handle himself well with limited time to learn the car.

Team owner Gene Haas said Camara's trajectory and association with the Ferrari academy, similar to that of Oliver Bearman, suggest younger drivers can make an immediate impact. Haas said Camara impressed the team with his test performance and they look forward to building on that relationship full-time next season.

I'm very happy to be joining TGR Haas F1 Team as a Formula 1 driver. It's an important step in my career and I want to thank Gene Haas and Ayao Komatsu for the trust they have placed in me.

Bearman's future still unclear

Haas have not yet confirmed that Oliver Bearman will drive for them again in 2027. The 21-year-old Brit, who joined Haas in 2025 and remains on Ferrari's books, has yet to finalise terms over an extension that would take him into a third campaign with the team.

Komatsu told Sky Sports F1 that Haas really enjoy working with Bearman and expect a deal to happen, but it is a matter of timing. He said he would like to think it will be finalised very soon, though the team are not ready to confirm it yet.
