Hilary Swank has announced she is pregnant with her third child at the age of 52. The Oscar-winning star of "Million Dollar Baby" shared the news on social media with a video showing her family dancing with glowsticks taped to their bodies, which revealed her baby bump.
The caption read, "A lot of people have been asking what project I'm doing next, this one releases in December." Swank, 52, and her husband Philip Schneider, also 52, had twins, daughter Aya and son Ohm, three years ago, when Swank was 48.
Medical experts weigh in
Dr. Kameelah Phillips, an OB-GYN, said it is "extremely rare" to be pregnant at 52 and that it carries serious medical considerations. She said most women in this age group are entering menopause, but that the uterus can be prepared to carry a pregnancy through IVF even if the ovaries have started to become quiet.
Phillips said Swank is "definitely probably being seen by a high-risk team." She listed increased risks for mothers including gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, diabetes and a higher risk of C-section.
