How Windows is being optimized for Nvidia’s RTX Spark laptops

Microsoft and Nvidia held a launch party for the first wave of RTX Spark laptops last week in San Francisco, where a new wave of AI PCs took center stage amid a packed crowd and a lively hands-on area. A day after the media event, I was invited to a quieter Nvidia event to hear a lot more about the new RTX Spark computing platform. While Nvidia's new laptops might look like regular Windows machines, the chips inside…

Key points

  • Microsoft and Nvidia have optimized Windows for the Arm-based RTX Spark laptop platform, including AI agents, emulation, memory tuning, and gaming support.
  • The first officially supported Windows AI agents on RTX Spark are Hermes, Perplexity, and OpenClaw, with setup designed to take about two clicks.
  • Copilot Plus PC features like Recall are not available on RTX Spark at launch and are expected to reach Windows Insiders later this year.

Microsoft and Nvidia held a launch event in San Francisco last week for the first wave of RTX Spark laptops. The machines use Arm-based chips instead of the x64 architecture used by AMD and Intel, and Microsoft has done extensive work to prepare Windows for the new platform.

The RTX Spark platform combines an Arm CPU, a Blackwell GPU, and unified memory to run local AI models on a laptop. Microsoft says the setup experience for AI agents is meant to be quick and easy.

AI agents and emulation

Peter Dawoud, a principal program manager at Microsoft, said users will see a new Get Started experience on an RTX Spark laptop that lets them find, install, and open an agent in only two clicks. Agents can be installed and updated through the Windows Store. Hermes, Perplexity, and OpenClaw are the first three officially supported agents at launch.

RTX Spark laptops rely on Microsoft's Prism emulator for apps without a native Arm version. Dawoud said emulation needs tuning for each platform and that Microsoft has optimized Prism for RTX Spark's microarchitecture. He added that Microsoft ships a Prism update every month to improve compatibility.

When users get into Windows for the first time, they'll see a new Get Started experience that will launch on an RTX Spark laptop that allows them to find the agent they want, get started with that agent, install it, and get to that agent in only two clicks

Memory and gaming

Microsoft has also focused on memory optimization. The Surface Laptop Ultra can ship with up to 128GB of unified memory. Dawoud said Microsoft invested in Unified Memory Architecture to load as much as possible into that memory while conserving space to keep the system responsive. A slider in Nvidia's Windows app lets users adjust how much unified memory is dedicated to the GPU.

Microsoft and Nvidia say RTX Spark laptops are not gaming machines, but they can run recent AAA titles. Anti-cheat support is in place for games including Fortnite, Marvel Rivals, Arc Raiders, Counter-Strike 2, and Dota 2. Activision's Ricochet will support RTX Spark in 2027, EA's Javelin is set for early 2027, and PUBG will work in the first half of 2027.

Windows features

Copilot Plus PC features such as Recall are not available on RTX Spark devices at launch. Adrienne Brewbaker, senior director of Windows marketing, said Microsoft is partnering closely with Nvidia to deliver Copilot Plus PC experiences on RTX Spark, expected to first reach Windows Insiders later this year.

Microsoft is also overhauling Windows Search with a focus on speed. The new interface includes actions such as turning Bluetooth on or off from the search bar. Dawoud said Microsoft thinks users will love it and that it will change how people interact with Windows.
