‘Jimi Horsedrix brought me so much joy’: the comic drawing a horse a day – and day 69’s is unsuitable for children

On day 58, he did a boxing Ali horse. On day 67, he did a howling horse. So what made Andy Field suddenly decide to draw 100 equines? And what made day 48’s so phallic? Andy Field was midway through his standup run at this year’s Edinburgh fringe when he was struck by an unusual urge – the urge to draw a horse. “I hadn’t sat down to draw anything since I was at school,” says the 34-year-old comedian. “Drawing was a…

Key points

  • Comedian Andy Field is drawing one horse a day until he is really good at drawing horses.
  • His first horse video drew over a million views, and later videos drew more than two million.
  • Field says being good means doing art and feeling fulfilled regardless of the outcome.

Comedian Andy Field, 34, began drawing a horse every day during his standup run at this year's Edinburgh fringe, after not having drawn since school. He posted the first effort to TikTok and Instagram alongside the project title Drawing a Horse Every Day Until I'm Really Good at Drawing Horses, and more than a million people watched the minute-long video.

Field is now approaching day 80 of the series. The horses have included a skateboarding horse on day 29, a howling horse on day 67 and an Ali-style boxing horse on day 58.

Named horses and mishaps

Field names each horse as part of his commentary. The guitar-playing horse on day 21 was called Jimi Horsedrix, and a day 48 drawing of a horse's face that turned out phallic was named Gentle Brian.

On day 50 he redrew his first attempt to show his progress, and on day 54 he made an oil painting after promising to do one at 100,000 followers. He also filmed drawings from a windy campsite at the End of the Road festival on days 14 to 16.

Prioritise what brings you joy – and a horse playing an electric guitar brought me so much joy.

— Andy Field

Viewers and the finish

Field says some viewers have been inspired to draw their own horses, and some watch each day with their children. He has launched a merch range featuring the day three drawing and day 27's Seabiscuits.

He plans to end the project at 100 horses, a number he chose after seeing the band Geese perform their song 100 Horses. He says his plan for the finish is "a bit elaborate".
