McKibbin one off lead in Delhi with McIlroy in contention

Tom McKibbin is one shot off the lead and Rory McIlroy three further back after a weather-disrupted opening day of the DP World India Championship.

Key points

  • Niklas Norgaard leads at six under after a 66 on a weather-hit first day in New Delhi.
  • Tom McKibbin is one shot back at five under, with Rory McIlroy at two under.
  • Lightning suspended play for five hours, leaving many players unable to finish.

Tom McKibbin of Northern Ireland finished the weather-delayed opening day of the DP World India Championship in New Delhi one shot off the lead. Denmark's Niklas Norgaard led at six under par after a 66 at Delhi Golf Club, while McKibbin, Spain's Eugenio Chacarra and Belgium's Thomas Detry were tied at five under.

Play was suspended because of lightning shortly after 06:30 BST and did not resume until five hours later. The delay left many players unable to complete their first 18 holes and prevented others from starting.

How the leaders played

Norgaard's 66 included an eagle, six birdies and two bogeys. He moved ahead with a late run of one eagle and five birdies over his final seven holes.

McKibbin, 23, made six birdies and one bogey. Starting at the 10th, he gained shots at four straight holes from the 12th to the 15th, dropped a shot at the par-four 16th, then birdied the 18th and third to briefly share the lead.

McIlroy, the back-to-back Masters champion, finished level with England's Tommy Fleetwood. Scots Scott Jamieson, Robert MacIntyre and Ewen Ferguson were at three under, along with India's Om Prakash Chouhan and England's Marcus Armitage.
