Mercedes-AMG’s first ground-up SUV is a 1,150hp electric beast

Earlier this year, Mercedes' AMG performance brand grabbed our attention with the GT four-door coupe, a souped-up sports sedan with three axial flux motors delivering over 1,150 horsepower. Well, now meet its beefier cousin, the 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV, an equally powerful, ultra-fast-charging electric people-hauler. The AMG GT SUV (say that five times fast) marks the first time in the performance brand's 59-year…

Key points

  • Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the 2028 GT SUV, its first full-size SUV developed entirely in-house.
  • The flagship GT 63 delivers 1,153hp from three axial flux motors and is due in the US next summer.
  • The 128kWh battery supports charging up to 710kW, reaching 10–80 percent in 12 minutes.

Mercedes-AMG has revealed the 2028 GT SUV, the first full-size SUV the performance brand has developed entirely in-house in its 59-year history. The electric vehicle is built on Mercedes' AMG.EA architecture and is scheduled to reach the US next summer.

It will come in three trims: GT 53, GT 55 and the flagship GT 63. The top model produces 1,153hp through the same three axial flux motors used in the GT four-door coupe, which the article says beats the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric with Launch Control.

Battery and charging

The SUV uses an 800-volt architecture with charging speeds of up to 710kW on the 128kWh battery in the GT 63 and GT 55, and 600kW on the 106kWh battery in the GT 53. Drivers can charge from 10 to 80 percent in 12 minutes, or gain up to 450km (around 280 miles) of WLTP range in 10 minutes.

The 128kWh versions have an estimated maximum range of 435 miles. The battery uses F1-inspired technology with NCMA cathodes, silicon-containing anodes and cylindrical cells, with nonconductive oil flowing around each cell for thermal management.

Handling, weight and interior

Mercedes-AMG replaced traditional mechanical roll bars with a suspension using active hydraulic elements to reduce pitch and roll, paired with three-stage air springs and standard six-degree active rear-axle steering. The GT 63 SUV weighs 5,941lbs, slightly less than the Lotus Eletre R at 6,007lbs and the Lucid Gravity at 6,100lbs, and nearly the same as the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric at 5,960lbs.

Inside, the MB.OS platform runs on a 14-inch display with AI agents from ChatGPT, Microsoft and Google. The AMGFORCE Sport+ drive program, standard on all trims, pipes in recorded sounds of real AMG V8 and six-cylinder engines and simulates gear shifts. Mercedes has not released official pricing.
