Sunderland latest: Le Bris urges players to 'respect' Torreense

Key points

  • Sunderland face Torreense in the Europa League on Thursday in Leiria.
  • Torreense play in Portugal's second tier but qualified by winning the Taca de Portugal.
  • Thomas Meunier is out injured; Wilson Isidor will be assessed; Brian Brobbey has travelled.

Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris said his side will not underestimate Torreense before Thursday's Europa League match in Leiria. Torreense play in the second tier of Portuguese football but reached the league phase after winning the Taca de Portugal title.

The fixture is one of seven Sunderland will play in October. It follows a 2-0 Premier League defeat to Brighton at the weekend.

Le Bris on the opponent

Le Bris said Sunderland will "respect this opponent" and noted that staff member Jose Fonte had warned him that Torreense are a really good team. He added that they earned the right to be in this position.

He also said it is important to manage the schedule and use the depth of the squad, calling rotation necessary while keeping a strong core.

We'll respect this opponent. In our staff we've got Jose Fonte so he warned us they are a really good team.

— Regis Le Bris

Team news and injuries

Thomas Meunier is set to miss out after coming off injured against Brighton. Le Bris said it is not a major injury and Meunier will be reassessed day-by-day.

Wilson Isidor will also be assessed after taking a knock against Brighton. Brian Brobbey, who was sidelined at the weekend, has travelled with the squad, as has Habib Diarra, and both will be involved in the process quickly.
