Swansea City head coach Vitor Matos has said racist abuse directed at Ji-sung Eom caused a lengthy stoppage during his team's 1-0 Championship win away at Millwall. The South Korea winger, 24, was warming up on the side of the pitch when referee Edward Duckworth halted the game for around seven minutes and held discussions with both sets of coaches.

What was announced at The Den

After the pause, an announcement over the stadium speakers at The Den confirmed there had been alleged chants of racism. It said police were working to identify any offenders using CCTV.

We all know there is no space for this, this kind of situation should not happen.

Millwall respond to allegation

Millwall said they were aware of an alleged, individual incident of discriminatory abuse towards a Swansea City player during the second half. The club said it operates a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of discriminatory abuse and that anyone found to have engaged in such behaviour will face the strongest possible action.

The hosts added that they are working alongside the relevant authorities and cannot comment further because the alleged incident is the subject of an ongoing police investigation, which the club fully supports.

Matos on the incident

Matos said the referee followed the protocol for these sort of situations and that both the officials and Millwall did the right thing to get the protocol moving on. He said there is no space for this kind of situation and that the squad will stand with Eom.

The Swansea boss said he was happy with how the matter was handled but really sad that it happened, and that the club will evaluate the situation. Victory kept Swansea two points clear at the top of the Championship, their best start to a season in a century.
