Trump told 60 Minutes to expect post-midterm firings

President Trump announced that Stephen Miller would replace Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff just hours after he told 60 Minutes that he'd be shaking up his team.

Key points

  • Trump said he expects to make a few changes after Republicans lost both chambers of Congress.
  • Stephen Miller will replace Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff.
  • Trump said he has confidence in Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for now.

President Trump said he expects to make staffing changes after Republicans lost both chambers of Congress, telling 60 Minutes he would do "a little bit" of firing. The interview with correspondent Ross Douthat is set to air Sunday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and Paramount+.

Hours after the interview, Trump announced that Stephen Miller would replace Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff. Wiles submitted her resignation on Thursday, a move CBS News reported was tied to the GOP's midterm defeats.

What Trump said about his team

Trump said he loves his Cabinet and considers its members good, but that he would be doing "maybe a few changes." He suggested Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is safe for now, saying he has confidence in him, despite CBS News reporting that he asked advisers this week whether the Pentagon chief should stay.

Trump also described military action, saying the U.S. had "won two wars" and taken out "billions and billions and billions of dollars." He said the war was won in less than one hour and that the result could be called a territory.

I do, yeah. Little bit.

— President Trump

A rare high-level departure

Wiles is among the most powerful people to leave the Trump administration, according to the article. A few Cabinet officials departed earlier this year: Attorney General Pam Bondi, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer.

After announcing Wiles' departure on Friday, Trump told reporters he "wanted to make a change" and that "sometimes in life, you have to make moves."
