An extreme rainfall event along Florida's southwestern coast could affect voting on Tuesday, the day polls open across the country. St. Lucie County, about an hour north of Palm Beach by car, announced changes to its polling places on Monday afternoon because of flooded roads.
Polling places relocated
The county's supervisor of elections said certain precincts had been temporarily moved so voters would have safe and accessible locations to cast their ballots. The supervisor said staff would keep checking sites to determine whether they are "functional" or not.

More rain forecast
Forecasters said more rain is expected through Wednesday in parts of Florida already hit by the weather, including St. Lucie County. The National Weather Service in Melbourne, Florida, described the event as a "1,000-year" rainfall event, meaning there is a 0.1% chance of rainfall of this size in any given year, not that it happens only once every 1,000 years.
The weather service said the rare event highlights the importance of flood preparedness and flood insurance, even outside designated high-risk flood zones.
