Key points
- Apple will require developers to declare dating and location-sharing features in its age rating questionnaire from November 16th.

Apple is introducing new App Store age rating requirements aimed at dating apps, location-sharing features and romanceable chatbots, The Verge reports. Developers will have to declare whether their apps let users share their real-world location or include features enabling dating, relationship or sexual behaviour between real people or virtual companions.
Apps with dating and relationships features will receive a minimum age rating of 18. Apps with location sharing will see their minimum age rating affected in some regions, depending on local regulations.
When the rules take effect
The new content descriptors were announced on Monday and will be added to the App Store Connect age rating questionnaire starting November 16th. All apps will be required to complete the new declarations by January 12th, 2027.
Why Apple is expanding ratings
Apple already has an 18-plus category, but it has largely applied to apps featuring gambling, violence, references to drugs, alcohol or tobacco, and nudity or sexual content. Most dating platforms are already adult-only, and Apple says the expanded ratings are an effort to prevent minors from slipping through the cracks.
The restrictions also aim to keep minors away from AI chatbots that support sexual or romantic interactions, and from virtual girlfriend or boyfriend simulators that could pose mental health risks.
