Chelsea latest: Burnley boss says Blues prevented Satpayev facing Charlton

Key points

  • Chelsea blocked on-loan midfielder Dastan Satpayev from playing for Burnley against Charlton on Tuesday.
  • Burnley manager Nicky Hayen said Chelsea's load-management policy prevented the 19-year-old from featuring.
  • Chelsea's strict playing-time policy previously contributed to former head coach Enzo Maresca's January departure.

Burnley manager Nicky Hayen said Chelsea prevented on-loan midfielder Dastan Satpayev from playing in Tuesday's 2-2 draw against Charlton. The 19-year-old Kazakhstan international is on a season-long loan at Turf Moor after joining from Astana in July.

Hayen said the decision came from Chelsea, which manages the player's load together with Burnley's medical team. Satpayev has played five times this season for Burnley, who are 21st in the Championship with one win under Hayen.

What Hayen said

Asked why Satpayev was absent from his line-up, Hayen said: "We were not allowed by Chelsea." He added that Chelsea did not allow the midfielder to play because he previously had a big injury, and that the clubs are managing his load together.

Hayen said the situation was unfortunate, noting that Satpayev offers another threat when he comes on. He has previously praised the midfielder, calling him "maybe the best player on the pitch" in August's 4-1 defeat to Norwich.

Chelsea's load policy

Chelsea's strict load-management policy has at times meant players being left out of selections despite being fit, though it has typically applied only to players at the club. It led to a rift that contributed to former head coach Enzo Maresca's departure in January after disagreements over selections and substitutions.

In December, Maresca described the days before Chelsea's game against Everton as "the worst 48 hours" of his Chelsea career, saying he felt unsupported. It later emerged he was referring to a lack of backing from club bosses in a falling out with medical staff over playing time for Cole Palmer, who was returning from injury. Club captain Reece James also had his playing time strictly managed last season after recurrent injuries.
