Google is bringing a more personal version of its Gemini AI assistant to your car

Google is bringing Gemini's Personal Intelligence feature to cars, allowing its AI assistant to draw on information from Gmail, Calendar, Maps, YouTube, and other Google services to deliver more personalized responses while driving.

Key points

  • Google is upgrading Gemini in vehicles with a personal intelligence feature that draws on Gmail, Calendar, YouTube, Maps and Search history.
  • The feature launches in Android Auto starting Tuesday and will reach cars with Google Built-in in the coming months.
  • Drivers must opt in, and Google says the feature can be turned on or off and apps chosen selectively.

Google announced Tuesday that it is upgrading the Gemini AI assistant in cars, trucks and SUVs with a personal intelligence feature. The company said the tool can use information from Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Google Search history and other connected Google services to understand a user's preferences, activities and past experiences.

The feature will reach vehicles in two ways: through Android Auto, which runs on the user's phone and projects navigation, media and messaging to the car's infotainment system, and through Google Built-in, software integrated directly into vehicles. It launches in Android Auto starting Tuesday and will expand to cars with Google Built-in in the coming months.

How the assistant works

Google said the upgrade connects information across users' Google apps. In one example from the company, a driver navigating to the airport could be alerted that a flight on their calendar is delayed.

The feature also allows complex requests in natural language. A user might ask for their flight gate and then ask whether the flight is still on time, and Gemini will answer both questions at the same time, according to Google.

User control over data

Drivers must opt in for Personal Intelligence to work. Google said users keep full control over their data: the feature can be turned on or off at any time, and users can selectively choose which apps to connect.

Gemini first launched in Android Auto last November. The Personal Intelligence feature rolled out across the U.S. in March and is now in beta in global markets, the company said.
