Hospitals deliberately targeted by Sudan's RSF fighters, BBC finds

The UN human rights chief Volker Türk says the multiple attacks may amount to war crimes.

Key points

  • RSF fighters allegedly destroyed el-Fasher's healthcare system.
  • UN chief called attacks on health facilities 'deeply disturbing'.
  • Doctors reported systematic targeting of medical sites during the siege.

A BBC investigation has uncovered evidence that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) systematically damaged and destroyed healthcare infrastructure in el-Fasher, Darfur, during their control of the city a year ago.

UN human rights chief Volker Türk described the findings as 'deeply disturbing' findings, stating that the RSF's attacks on civilian health facilities violate international humanitarian law.

Impact on medical workers

Between April 2023 and October 2025, the BBC documented that 55 medical personnel were killed, 120 injured, and 10 were forcibly taken in the western city.

Allegations and denials

The RSF's health minister dismissed these claims as propaganda from the national army. Conversely, doctors detailed a pattern of deliberate attacks on hospitals, even makeshift medical centers.
