Martinez outburst came out of 'anger and frustration'

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez says he "spoke out of anger and frustration" when launching a scathing attack on the club's hierarchy.

Key points

  • Lisandro Martinez said his criticism of Manchester United's hierarchy came from anger and frustration.
  • He questioned the club's summer investment and said he expects more from technical director Jason Wilcox.
  • United have not won in five games and sit 13th in the Premier League with six points.

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has said he "spoke out of anger and frustration" after criticising the club's hierarchy. The Argentina international had attacked United for not strengthening the squad in the summer following Champions League qualification, speaking after Tuesday's 2-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid.

Martinez said he expected more investment in the squad and "more from our technical director [Jason Wilcox]". He stopped short of apologising but said he has belief in his team-mates, manager Michael Carrick and everyone working to move the club forward.

What Martinez said

In a social media post, Martinez wrote: "After the match, I spoke out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we all wanted." He said his words reflected how much he wants to see the club competing for the biggest honours.

He added that when he talks about wanting more, he means the ambition everyone at the club must have, and that the standards start with him. He said he believes in his team-mates, the manager and everyone working to help the club move forward.

After the match, I spoke out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we all wanted.

United's poor run

Manchester United have not won in five games since beating Sabah in the Champions League on 10 September. They have won just two of their nine games this season and are 13th in the Premier League with six points from as many games.

Martinez's contract expires at the end of the season and United have the option to extend it by another year. United's next game is at Leeds United in the Premier League on Sunday, 18 October.
