Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang urges U.S.-China dialogue on 'potentially dangerous' AI

Huang told CNBC he has ongoing "dialogs" with researchers in China.

Key points

  • Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the chipmaker must work with Chinese AI companies on monitoring risks.
  • Huang called for U.S.-China dialogue on AI, saying he has dialogues with many researchers in China.
  • U.S. and Chinese officials discussed a possible AI dialogue channel in September before a Trump-Xi meeting.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the chipmaker must work with Chinese AI companies to monitor risks around what he called potentially dangerous artificial intelligence. Speaking to CNBC at a media briefing in London on Wednesday evening, Huang said the two sides should cooperate to advance the technology safely.

His comments come as debate over AI safety has grown, with researchers from labs including OpenAI and Anthropic calling for a slowdown in development and warning of existential risks.

Huang urges dialogue

Huang said dialogue was the way to engage with Chinese AI companies and that he has dialogues with many researchers in China. He said the United States should enhance such dialogue and that he advocated the U.K. do the same.

He also said the U.K. is positioned to be a convener of many AI-related dialogues because of its intellectual capital.

We absolutely should work with each other so that we advance the technology safely.

— Jensen Huang

Contrast with other CEOs

OpenAI's Sam Altman and Anthropic's Dario Amodei have called for greater regulation of AI. Huang has emerged as a prominent voice opposing that view.

U.S.-China talks

AI safety has become a key topic between the U.S. and Chinese governments as both weigh how to address risks from the rapidly advancing technology. In September, before U.S. President Donald Trump met Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent discussed the prospect of a U.S.-China AI dialogue with his Chinese counterpart, He Lifeng, including a channel for incidents up to a national security level.

A Chinese readout of the meeting said Xi stated the two countries may have competition but may cooperate even more in AI, and that they can continue dialogue on AI, exchange views on its risks and benefits, and jointly prevent misuse and abuse.
