Key points

  • Democrats have taken control of the Senate, House and several key governorships, with many seats still to come in.
  • Democrats needed 218 House seats to win control and held 212 before the election.
  • Thirty-three Senate seats and 36 governorships were up for election this year.

Democrats have taken control of the Senate, the House and several key governorships in the 2026 US midterm elections, according to live results, with many seats still to be counted. Republicans had held the Senate majority and were defending a majority in the 435-member House before the vote.

Democrats held 212 House seats and needed 218 to win control. Thirty-three of the 100 Senate seats were being elected regularly this year, along with two special elections in Florida and Ohio, where Marco Rubio and JD Vance resigned their seats to join the executive branch after the 2024 presidential election.

Battleground races decided the outcome

Before the election, the Cook Report classified six Senate races as genuine toss-ups, and Democrats needed to win at least three of them alongside races they were expected to win. Democrats were also favoured in enough House seats to take the chamber without winning any of the 18 seats the Cook Political Report classed as toss-ups.

Republicans, favoured in 195 House seats, would have needed to sweep all 18 toss-ups and flip five Democratic-leaning seats to win. The balance of power rested on whether Democrats would hold the 18 seats rated lean Democratic.

Governorships and how results are called

Gubernatorial elections were taking place in 36 states and three territories. Republicans and Democrats held 18 state governorships each before the election, and three incumbent governors were retiring.

The results are reported by the Associated Press, which calls a winner in a state when it determines the trailing candidate has no path to victory. This can happen before 100% of votes in a state have been counted.
