Liverpool beat Chelsea 6-5 in a penalty shoot-out at Anfield on Wednesday to reach the English League Cup quarter-finals. The last-16 tie had ended 1-1 in normal time.

The match was between childhood friends Andoni Iraola and Xabi Alonso, the Liverpool and Chelsea managers. Iraola took the bragging rights.

How the shoot-out unfolded

Chelsea's Morgan Rogers scored from the spot in normal time, and Cody Gakpo equalised with a penalty just before half-time. Chelsea's Valentin Barco hit the post in the shoot-out, and Liverpool's Kostas Tsimikas blazed over a chance to win it.

Ryan Gravenberch was denied by Chelsea keeper Mike Penders, but Giorgi Mamardashvili saved Emmanuel Emegha's kick to keep Liverpool alive. After Joe Gomez scored, Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana miscued into the Kop as the hosts advanced.

Every time you reach the penalties, someone will feel it is harsh to go out of the competition.

What the managers said

Iraola said: "We are really happy. Three wins at home in a row is very important. We were struggling at home in the league but now we go against Arsenal on Sunday." He will face his former club Bournemouth in the last eight.

Alonso said: "Every time you reach the penalties, someone will feel it is harsh to go out of the competition." He added that the Premier League is Chelsea's main focus. It was his third defeat in three visits to Anfield as a manager.
