Democrats have flipped over 40 House seats. Here's the breakdown.

Democrats won control of the House on Tuesday by flipping more than three dozen Republican-held seats, picking up perennial swing districts and seats that were once considered deep red.

Key points

  • Democrats flipped 43 House districts to their column while Republicans flipped two, according to CBS News projections.
  • Several GOP incumbents who won by double digits in 2024 lost, including Jeff Van Drew, Mike Turner and Ann Wagner.
  • Redistricting fights in Texas and California reshaped races, with Texas Republicans netting one seat and Democrats taking two redrawn red districts.

Democrats won control of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, flipping more than three dozen Republican-held seats, CBS News reports. So far 43 districts have shifted to Democrats and two to Republicans, with winners in dozens of races not yet projected.

The 2026 midterms followed a nationwide mid-decade redistricting effort, with Texas Republicans moving several districts rightward at President Trump's request, California Democrats shifting districts left and other states adjusting maps for partisan ends.

Upsets and rematches

Democrats unseated several Republicans who had won by wide margins two years earlier. In New Jersey's 2nd District, Zack Mullock defeated Rep. Jeff Van Drew, who won by 16.9 points in 2024. Ohio's Mike Turner, Missouri's Ann Wagner, Indiana's Victoria Spartz and Wisconsin's Bryan Steil also lost.

Other Democrats won rematches, including Janelle Stelson over Rep. Scott Perry in Pennsylvania's 10th District and Elaine Luria over Rep. Jen Kiggans in Virginia's 2nd. Christine Bohannon beat Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Iowa's 1st District in their third consecutive matchup.

So far, 43 districts have shifted to Democrats and two have shifted to Republicans.

Redistricting and regional shifts

In Texas, Republicans redrew maps hoping to pick up as many as five Democratic seats; one seat flipped to the GOP, while Democrats won two redrawn districts, including Bobby Pulido's defeat of Rep. Monica De La Cruz in the 15th. California Democrats took all five seats they targeted after voters approved their own redistricting plan.

Democrats also made gains across the Midwest, the Northeast and Western states. In Iowa, the House delegation goes from all-Republican to three Democrats and one Republican, and in Montana, Sam Forstag will be the first Democrat to represent the state in the House in three decades.
